Day 1     Arrive in Lhasa, stay at Lhasa for 3 nights. (3650 m) (No meal)

Lhasa arrival, meet your local guide at Lhasa Gongga Airport and transfer to hotel in Lhasa city (60 km. 1 hour). Take a rest in the afternoon in order to become acclimatized to the thin air. Lhasa is 3,700 meters above the sea level. It is the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region. Stay at Four Points by Sheraton Lhasa for 3 nights.

Day 2     Lhasa city exploration (Breakfast)

Hotel breakfast. You will visit the Potala Palace in the morning. Perched upon Marpo Ri hill, 130 meters above the Lhasa valley, the Potala Palace rises a further 170 meters and is the greatest monumental structure in all of Tibet. Early legends concerning the rocky hill tell of a sacred cave, considered to be the dwelling place of the Bodhisattva Chenresi (Avilokiteshvara) that was used as a meditation retreat by the Emperor Songtsen Gampo in the seventh century AD.

Then you will visit the Jokhang monastery and walk round the Barkhor Street. Included on UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2000 as part of the Potala Palace, the Jokhang monastery is located in central Lhasa. It is the ultimate pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Pilgrims. The Barkhor Street is a very ancient round street surrounding the Jokhang Temple and the Tibetan people are always proud of it. It’s said that in AD 647, the first Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo (AD 617 – 650) built the Jokhang Temple.

Situated at the foot of the Mountain Gambo Utse, 5 km (3.1 miles) from the western suburb of Lhasa, the Drepung Monastery is known as the most important monastery of Gelugpa in Tibetan Buddhism. It is considered one of the ‘Three Great Monasteries’ (the other two are the Ganden Monastery and the Sera Monastery. Covering an area of 250,000 square meters (299,007 square yards), it held once 7,700 monks in total and possessed 141 fazendas and 540 pastures, and is the largest – scale monastery among the ones of the same kind.

Day 3     Lhasa city exploration (Breakfast)

Hotel breakfast. Today you will visit the summer resort of Dalai Lama – the Norbulingka Palace. Part of the “Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace “, the Norbulingka Palace is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was added as an extension of this Historic Ensemble in 2001. It was built by the Dalai Lama VII and served both as administrative centre and religious centre. It is a unique representation of Tibetan palace architecture. Then you will visit the Tibetan family.

After lunch, you will visit the notable Sera Monastery for experiencing lamas’ debate on Buddhist scriptures. The Sera Monastery in Tibet and its counterpart in Mysore, India are the best locations to witness the “Monk Debates” on the teachings of the Buddha and the philosophy of the Buddhism. The Sera Monastery developed over the centuries as a renowned place of scholarly learning, training hundreds of scholars, many of whom have attained fame in the Buddhist nations.

Day 4     Drive to Shigatse (3900 m) via Gyangtse (3950 m) , stay at Gyangtse for 1 night. (Breakfast)

Hotel breakfast and check out. In the morning drive to Gyantse along the Kyichu River. On the Kamba La (4.796 m) have a fantastic view of the holy lake of Yamdrok Yumtso (4441 m), one of the three holy lakes in Tibet and the largest habitat of waterfowls in south Tibet. On one of the peninsulas of the spear-shaped lake lies the holy Mt. Donang Sangwari (5,340m), and the snow peaks of Nojin Gangzang (7,191m) and Jangzang Lhomo rise in the distance. The lake and the Yarlungtsangpo River (3570) are separated by a mountain and the shortest distance between them is only 6 kilometers. The 800m-high difference contributes a rich water resource to this region. Many Tibetans believe that the life of Tibet will no longer continue when the lake dries up.

Pass by the 5.010 m high Karo La and the Simi La to Gyantse (approx. 3.900 m). In the afternoon visit Pelkor Chode Monastery as well as the splendid Kumbum Stupa (100-Thousand-Buddha Pagoda) nearby, both of them built in the15th century and situated in the northwestern edge of Gyantse.

In the afternoon drive about 90 kilometers to Shigatse, (3880m), the second largest city with 40,000 inhabitants in Tibet and the traditional capital of the Tsang. Stay at Gyangtse for 1 night.

Day 5     Shigatse (3900 m), departure (Breakfast)

Today you will visit Tashilunpo monastery of Gelug Sect, the seat of the Panchen Lama built in 1447 and one of the six grand monasteries in Tibet. The monastery houses a giant statue of the Maitreya Buddha, the biggest gilded statue of Maitreya (Buddha of the future) in China, and a tomb of the 4th Panchen Lama containing masses of jewels and gold. In Tibet Buddhism, Panchen Lama is the reincarnation of Maitreya Buddha. Today 600 monks live in the monastery.

After visit, drive back to Lhasa airport for departure.
