Day 2 Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Minsha Sand Hill and Crescent Moon Lake (breakfast)

Hotel breakfast. Today you will go to The Mogao Caves. The caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years. The first caves were dug out 366 AD as places  of Buddhist meditation and worship. The Mogao Caves are the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes and, along with Longmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes, are one of the three famous ancient sculptural sites of China. The caves also have famous wall paintings.

Then you will go to Mingsha Sand Dune and Crescent Moon Lake. Mingsha San Dune is named after the sound of the wind whipping off the dunes. You can ride camels, guided by a local camel guide, to reach the sand dunes. Once at the top of the dunes, visitors can ride sleds down the sand slopes, much like snow-sledding during winter season in skiing area. There is a legend that says how, in ancient times, a general with many soldiers came here to fight in a war with their enemies. While they were engaged in a fierce battle, a great gust of wind buried all the warriors in the sand and the sand mountain was formed. As the battle was at its height, the soldiers continued to fight beneath the sand. Thus, the sound you hear is said to be the roar of the soldiers. However, the real cause is the friction and static created as the wind shifts the sand or you slip down the mountainside.

Crescent Moon Lake The crescent moon lake is a lake that lies in the centre of the desert. In the south bank of crescent moon lake a pavilion stands tall and erect. It has empress palace, dragon royal palace, Bodhisattva palace, god of medicine cave, scripture hall, thunder spirit table and so forth. They are surrounded by Mingsha Sand Dune. Though the crescent moon lake is located in the desert, it never dries up. Most people consider it a wonder.

It is the first pass at the west end of the Great Wall of China, near the city of Jiayuguan in Gansu province. It has also been called “Jiayuguan Pass”; however, this form is redundant since “guan” means “pass” in Chinese. Along with Juyongguan and Shanhaiguan, it is one of the main passes of the Great Wall. There are two gates: one on the east side of the pass, and the other on the west side. On each gate there is a building. An inscription of “Jiayuguan” in Chinese is written on a tablet at the building at the west gate. The south and north sides of the pass are connected to the Great Wall. There is a turret on each corner of the pass. On the north side, inside the two gates, there are wide roads leading to the top of the pass. Jiayuguan consist of three defense lines: an inner city, an outer city and a moat. After visit transfer to railway station and take D train to Zhangye D2746 18:28/19:49. Because of aridity, the Zhangye Danxia Landform differs from that of south China. It is very dry and desolate, without any vegetation, so geologists call this “window lattice and palace-shaped Danxia topography”.

Visit the Mati temple and Dafo temple in the afternoon, Mati temple is famous of its Buddhist grotto art, Qilian Mountain Landscape and Yugu minority folklore. Dafo Temple in Zhangye city, was founded in 1098 in the Xixia Dynasty (1038-1227). It houses the largest indoor lying Buddha statue, measuring 34.5 meters in length and 20.2 meters in height.
