Highlights | 2019 Sisters Meal Festival

The Sister’s Meal Festival in ShidongThe festival takes place every spring and is one of the most active festivals of the Miao. It is regarded as the Oriental Valentine’s Day. The girls dressed in their embroidered costumes and wear splendid silver apparel. During the festival, there are numbers of traditional activities will be held, including drum dancing, buffalo fights, horse racing, and lusheng dancing.

Miao embroidery
The Miao have a rich and unique tradition of embroidery. This richness cannot be explained except by the fact that they had no written tradition. It is postulated that the embroideries replace the written word, and tell the story of the Miao. The Miao’s girls begin to learn embroidery at the age of six or seven.

Batik of the Miao
Batik is the technique of wax-resist dyeing of cloth, whereby selected areas are painted with wax by the artisan before dyeing. The wax is then removed with boiling water revealing the pattern. Although the tradition of making batik can be found in a number of countries, the Miao minority have a distinctive indigo and white style that is instantly recognisable.

Zhenyuan old townZhenyuan has a long history of 2,000 years, the town of Zhenyuan is divided into two parts by Wuyuang river, which goes to Yangtze River. Wuyang river brought business and outside culture into Guizhou in the past. Because of Wuyang river, Zhenyuan town got its name called “Oriental Venice”. Surrounded by gorgeous mountains and rivers, the town is best-known for its picturesque landscape, historic sites and mysterious ethnic cultures.

Black Dragon cave & Taoist Buddhist temple complex

The Black Dragon Cave is in fact an ancient temple complex located on Zhonghe Mountain to the east of Zhenyuan Ancient Town. Surviving a couple of wars, the Black Dragon Cave was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and its current shape is the result of several renovations.
