Photography is not only about hanging it on a wall. It can be surprising, fresh, disgusting, funny and ugly. I would then never hang it on a wall. But it can still be good photography to me.

-Oliver Oettli

1. Submission Title 标题:Beautiful ancient old town
Name 姓名:Tanety Solikin
LIKES 点赞:142
Description 描述:The ancient old town of Xitang is fabulous after the rain in the evening.

Judge’s opinions
Ioana Farcas: Beautiful shot, balanced colours. I like how the boats introduce some foreground interest and depth in the image, as well as the overall eerie feel. This photo has character and intent and is beautifully executed. I would have personally cropped down a bit of the sky to lift the horizon line with the village in the background slightly higher.

Oliver Oettli: The obvious winner from a “pleasing the eye” point of view. I can’t help but wondering how much editing went into this photo. I am not a big fan of overediting. The Light, Colors and Sky don’t fit together somehow. It looks beautiful. But my photographer self gets suspicious about it.

Guyu Syhr

Eleanor Moseman: I agree with Ioana on changing the viewpoint a bit and viewing it with doubt like Oliver. If you look at the reflection of the sky in the water, the clouds and blue do not match the reflection. As an architectural and interior photographer, this is terribly obvious to me because it’s part a requirement for us to shoot at sunrise and sunset. There’s something that’s not sitting well with me on the authenticity of this image. The boats show motion blur but nothing else so it was obviously shot with a tripod of some sort. It also looks as if it was shot at about 16-18mm focal length which is a little odd for a cell phone. Yes…pleasing and beautiful image capturing an old town at dusk but simply because of question of authenticity, it will not be my first choice this week.

Wang Gangfeng

Judge’s opinions
Ioana Farcas: I love the graphic nature of this image. It evokes a sense of wonder, the white flowers in the tree make for a beautiful contrast with the sky and the roof. This image stands out from the usual sky depictive images and shows creativity, planning and originality in point of view. Nice work.

Oliver Oettli: Beautiful. A tiny bit much of the black part for me. Perfect timing of the daylight. 5 minutes later the effect would have been gone. The 45 degrees angle fits well and the photographer picked the right place. Its not an overwhelming photo for me, but its truly deserves to be in the shortlist.

Guyu Syhr

Eleanor Moseman: There is a flag called “The Dream Flag” and the design came to the 16th Karmapa in a dream. A blue and yellow wave divided diagonally just like this As a reminder of absolute truth, the blue symbolizes the wisdom, or emptiness aspect of awakened being, while the yellow stands for the compassion aspect. The wavy intermingling of the two colors represents their inseparability. I can’t help but think of the balance between the beauty of nature and the beauty that can be created by man or woman. There’s something simple and thoughtful with this image that appeals to me on a more personal note. We are so bombarded these days with media and reports of pain of others, that this little image reminds me of our interconnectedness. I do wish the vignette filter wasn’t used to blur the corners and out edges…it would of been better without that.

Wang Gangfeng

3. Submission Title 标题: Stay real!
Name 姓名:Ann Chen
LIKES 点赞:37
Description 描述:After strong Zumba was exhausted in the metro station.

Judge’s opinions
Ioana Farcas: This image made me smile. Feels more like a random snapshot which could be of some artistic effect and I think what makes this self-portrait stand out is the title accompanied. ‘Stay real!’ No perfect selfie with a half-fake smile, eyes-enlarging, skin-whitening, bunny ears doodle adding app, just a random silly snapshot pic. Still, maybe not something I would personally publish any further than on my own social media.

Oliver Oettli: YES! I am so happy this photo made it on the shortlist! Its refreshing, honest and funny. I am truly sick of people always shooting these “I am so perfect and happy” selfies, taken with a “face optimization app” that makes them all look like little teenagers. So its an honest shot and fits perfectly to the mood of “Exhausted after Zumba”

Guyu Syhr

Eleanor Moseman: I wish more of us could stay real. Not a winning shot but I love the “tongue in cheek” approach to the nauseating selfie that we are too often bombarded with. Social media, in my opinion, has encouraged hyper criticism of our appearance and this is refreshing. Ann, thanks for the shot this week that reminds many of us, that there are others as real as you. I want more selfies like this…but maybe not so much for a travel photography competition. My recommendation to Ann, is to keep playing with the idea of self portraiture but use a tripod and really have a good time with it. I recommend she research the artists such as Cindy Sherman, Lucas Samaras, and the late Ren Hang. I’d love to be able to see “Ann Chen” with some of the greats. My opinion is to be a decent photographer, you need to know what it feels like to be on the other side of the camera…and I think Ann might be on to something.

Wang Gangfeng

Judge’s opinions
Ioana Farcas: Beautiful composition and use of the rule of odds – good choice of deciding to include just 3 of the benches. The rich texture created by the leaves in the tree as well as on the ground are maybe the most appealing to me about the image. Not a big fan of square cropped images, but I wonder if perhaps was indeed the best choice here. Overall good work.

Oliver Oettli: I agree with Ioana’s comment here 100%. The colors, tree and leaves on the floor make the photo. The person is not adding any value to the shot in my opinion. But it also doesn’t harm. Maybe the angle would have been even better by standing just 1-2 m more to the right. But maybe not. I believe square shaped photos can in fact be a perfect choice, depending on the composition.

Eleanor Moseman: Is she taking a photo of a dead dog? I’m very indifferent about the person taking a photo of a dog on the ground. I think both could be removed. Also, not a fan of square format. I feel like that trend has died out since Instagram has changed their posting formats. It feels gimmicky to me, unless it’s been shot on a TLR film camera. Like the other judges comments, the texture and color of trees and leaves makes this appealing. I would of moved the viewpoint up so I could see the city in the background and tried getting a little closer.

Wang Gangfeng

5. Submission Title 标题:Shanghai shines
Markel Ahlenius
LIKES 点赞:31
Description 描述:Shanghai shines and glimmer. The city is like a great cocktail of the now and the old. Down the backstreets near the Bund history bounces between the buildings. Echoing glam, jazz, bars and the smell of cigars. The neon sign glows warm in the dawn as the future-esque Oriental Pearl Tower glitters like a candy cane.

Judge’s opinions
Ioana Farcas: Great description for what this image is trying to express. Original in point of view to show the Pearl Tower symbol in juxtaposition with the glam of the city apropriately reflected here in the side of a car. I still would’ve liked to see this image leveled and possibly the sign on the right cropped entirely.

Oliver Oettli: I’m struggling a bit with this photo. Its nice… but it doesn’t touch me. The angle was well chosen. Unlike Ioana I believe leveling the photo would kill the effect. Because you would have to choose a different crop. And that crop here is the one that works for me. So… nice work. A good keeper. But not mind-blowing.

Eleanor Moseman: Of course this was taken by Markel! It screams his style from last week’s winning shot. When I look at this image, my eyes for from the left top corner and is led directly into the street gutter of the bottom right corner. There is nothing in this composition that keeps the viewers eyes moving through the image. It’s too busy and makes me feel a little frustrated as if he’s trying to show me something that I have to work hard to find. Like his image last week, he definitely knows the best time to photograph and is playing with angles and shapes which is great! But, this doesn’t grab like some of the others this week. I think he would also benefit greatly from studying the paintings of the great Masters. Too often amateurs study only from photographers but I think he could learn a lot from some of the great landscape painters. Turner, Delacroix, Friedrich are a few.

6. Submission Title 标题:reflection
Name 姓名:Orange Wang

Judge’s opinions
Ioana Farcas: I enjoy the colour tones in the image most and the blurred reflection in the water make for a pleasing effect.

Oliver Oettli: Yeah.. well.. I… hmm.. no… not really. Nice colors, I agree. Other then that. I see nothing remarkable about the shot. Its a reflection of a boat. Okay. but why? Maybe I’m missing a point. And that’s one big thing: If you take a photo – at all times think about WHY you take this photo! What is your point, what do you want to tell? If you can’t answer this question to yourself. Don’t waste data storage on your phone.

Guyu Syhr

Eleanor Moseman: There is nothing exceptional about this image. Yes…it’s water and a boat is EXACTLY what I would expect to see a reflection of. Why? There is nothing that holds my attention or leads me to a story or anecdote. It reminds me of an image I might accidentally take when putting my phone in my pocket. The color treatment and toning helps it make look artsy but it seems like a gimmick, like when someone can’t focus their camera and says it’s out of focus for aesthetics. Make images intentionally.

Wang Gangfeng

Hiking in the French part of Alpes

Judge’s opinions
Ioana Farcas: I like that the author of this image chose to fill the frame with the mountain rock formations which is effective in this sitation. It allowes the viewer to explore the details and texture of the lanscape which wouldn’t be possible if photographed from someplace further. Bringing in the composition a person who looks like an active and engaged participator to the scenery is a good choice, the person’s movement together with the water’s movement both complement each other in energy and add dimension and force to the image.

Oliver Oettli: Well, I can’t see as many good points in the photo as others. You should have cropped the tiny bit of sky on the top right. Then the pattern of the rocks would work better. The “action” on the photo with the woman trying to cross the water is not adding any value to the photo in my opinion. So its either a mediocre landscape photo or a mediocre action photo. But in this case, two times “half” doesn’t add to “full”.

Guyu Syhr

Eleanor Moseman: I had to find the caption for this image because I made up a story that she was running around the mountains to save a bag of chips. There’s no heavy backpack, not even trekking boots…but a caption of trekking in the French Alps like she just ran off a Shanghai subway. I’m wondering if it got so many votes because it’s such and “exotic” location. I would of let the crazy woman escape with her bag of snacks and gotten closer to photograph the rushing water over the rocks…playing with the different color and texture between wet and dry stones…white rushing water and clear streams.  If there is an attachment to the woman by the photographer, i.e. friend, family, partner, you need to let go of emotional attachment to photographs because this is not helping.

Wang Gangfeng

8. Submission Title

Judge’s opinions

Ioana Farcas: Although an over popular theme of sun setting water reflections I like that the author of this image waited for the right moment for the surfer to reach the reflection of the sun-setting in the water which shows a degree of planning. I cannot help, however but think this image would’ve had a better impact cropped as a portrait with the surfer on the left hand side. Less of the sea and in this case and more emphasis on the surfer in a tighter shot would have added to the image.

Oliver Oettli: its a picture of a stand up paddler during a sunset. Ok.

Eleanor Moseman: Crooked horizon and too much water. I would of gone more to sea level to get more sky and less water. Might be stronger to trim off the bottom to make a panoramic. But it still doesn’t capture any mood or story element for me. It’s another sunset with a silouette and I urge the photographer to experiment with more angles and focal length of lens. Perhaps a tele lens would of worked a little better.

Wang Gangfeng

9. Submission Title 标题:No pain no gain
Description 描述: “The shadow of the pain taken between 2 reps”

Judge’s opinions
Oliver Oettli: I like it. It has a certain comical aspect in it, like No. 3. It tells a story about a woman without showing her. its visually not very appealing and we don’t have to discuss composition etc. Just like with No. 3. However, I love this picture exactly for the storytelling part. And it tells a lot about the photographers view.

Eleanor Moseman: At first I thought it was a skull and then a face with a gas mask on. Is this a Rorschach test? It took more than a minute to see the human form/reflection in the gym seat. I don’t get it and often audiences don’t like viewing images where we are left feeling like an image maker is trying a trick to show how clever he or she is. Also, the body type is unrealistic and I don’t know why it’s showing a back view when the viewpoint would be someone facing forward. Is this a composite image? It’s just weird, and not in a good way.

Wang Gangfeng

Submission Title
Amy Lee

Judge’s opinions
Oliver Oettli: I believe the votes were very tight this week and at least half of the selection could have been different with only a few other votes. There are several pictures that I would have preferred to be in the shortlist. My special mention this week goes to Amylee’s photo. Its so simple, reduced and yet beautiful. The colors are fantastic. The pastel sky with the white dress, the red hat as a contrast and the orange sand make up for a dream like scenery. The Model is just moving and the moment captured with the sand forming a wave in the air is perfect! Also the composition with the horizon being exactly at the third of the photo is of course a plus. For me, this photo should have won the week. I’m sad it didn’t even make it to the Shortlist.
