For those in favour of a destination with a long glorious history, Pingyao is the perfect place to go to. It offers its visitors typical northern style architecture, colorful local traditions and culture. For hundreds of years the city was the financial centre of ancient China. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties the famous Jin Businessman opened banks and exchange shops which made the town what the Wall Street is to the US today. Nowadays, Pingyao is not a financial centre anymore but has preserved its historical charm. It was announced a United Nations World Heritage Site and with its strong city walls and marvelous ancient streets it still lets you experience its former glory while wandering through the small alleys.
From Pingyao it is easily possible to visit the Mount Wutai or the stunning Hanging Monastery and Yungang Grottoes in Datong.
