The Shoton Festival is one of the most popular traditional festivals in Tibet. On the first day, a 500m2 Buddha painting (Thangka) will be unveiled, indicating the start of the Shoton Festival. Along with the Tibetan operas and yoghurt eating, a lot of other activities take place such as yak racing, horse racing and dancing.

    The Shoton Festival is one of the most popular traditional festivals in Tibet. On the first day, a 500m2 Buddha painting (Thangka) will be unveiled, indicating the start of the Shoton Festival. Along with the Tibetan operas and yoghurt eating, a lot of other activities take place such as yak racing, horse racing and dancing. The highlight of your Lhasa visit is to participate the Shoton Festival. Beside, you will still visit the Potala Palace, the greatest monumental structure in all of Tibet. Walk on the Barkhor Street, and appreciate the ambience of this ancient street surrounding the Jokhang Temple, the ultimate pilgrimage destination and UNESCO’s World Heritage. You will also discover the Tibetan culture though the local people, visiting a traditional Tibetan family and share their life.

    Day 1 Aug 19 Sat Arrive in Lhasa (3700 m)
    Lhasa arrival, meet your local guide at Lhasa Gongga Airport and transfer to hotel in Lhasa city (60 km. 1 hour). Take a rest in the afternoon in order to become acclimatized to the thin air. Lhasa is 3,700 meters above the sea level. It is the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region.

    You will visit the Potala Palace in the morning. Perched upon Marpo Ri hill, 130 meters above the Lhasa valley, the Potala Palace rises a further 170 meters and is the greatest monumental structure in all of Tibet. Early legends concerning the rocky hill tell of a sacred cave, considered to be the dwelling place of the Bodhisattva Chenresi (Avilokiteshvara) that was used as a meditation retreat by the Emperor Songtsen Gampo in the seventh century AD.

    In the afternoon visit Jokhang monastery, the center of the Tibetan Buddhism and the sacred land of Buddhist followers where thousands of pilgrims come for worship everyday. The temple, built in 647, is the earliest wood-and-masonry structure still existing in Tibet. Walk on the Barkhor street surrounding Jokhang, a big free market with its prolific stalls for selling local specialties. The Barkhor Street is a very ancient round street surrounding the Jokhang Temple and the Tibetan people are always proud of it. It's said that in AD 647, the first Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo (AD 617 - 650) built the Jokhang Temple.

    Today you will visit the summer resort of Dalai Lama – the Norbulingka Palace. Part of the "Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace ", the Norbulingka Palace is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was added as an extension of this Historic Ensemble in 2001. It was built by the Dalai Lama VII and served both as administrative centre and religious centre. It is a unique representation of Tibetan palace architecture. Then you will visit the Tibetan family.

    After lunch, you will visit the notable Sera Monastery for experiencing lamas' debate on Buddhist scriptures. The Sera Monastery in Tibet and its counterpart in Mysore, India are the best locations to witness the “Monk Debates” on the teachings of the Buddha and the philosophy of the Buddhism. The Sera Monastery developed over the centuries as a renowned place of scholarly learning, training hundreds of scholars, many of whom have attained fame in the Buddhist nations.

    Day 4 Aug 22 Tue Lhasa, Shoton festival (Breakfast)
    In the morning visit Drepung monastery the sacred land of Gelug Sect., which was established in 1416 and the second, third and fourth Dalai Lama once resided in. Today the opening ceremony of the grand Shoton (Yogurt Banquet) Festival will be held here. Watch the "Unfolding of the giant thangka at the Shoton Festival".

    Then enjoy the Tibetan opera at the summer resort of Dalai Lama – the Norbulingka Palace.
