| The
capital of Henan province; an important inland city opening to the outside
world and also a well-known historical and cultural city in China. It may be regarded today primarily as an industrial and business center, yet its long history and numerous archeological and cultural sites make it a must-see destination for those who are truly interested in ancient Chinese history. Present-day Zhengzhou has been nicknamed China's "green city" because of its many trees and ornamental plantings. Vegetation covers fully 36 percent of the city. With a population of around 2 million, Zhengzhou is small by Chinese standards and offers a welcome change from the crowded streets of Guangzhou or Shanghai. It also is a modern city. Designated as a commercial and industrial development site in the 1950s, Zhengzhou grew quickly from a population of 100,000 to its present size and became a major center for textiles and food processing. Thus, most of its major buildings and city facilities are 40 years old or less.
