Heaven Lake ............................................................................................................................................................................ |
| Anyone who
has come as Urumqi should not miss this picturesque area. Three and a half
hours away by bus, Tianchi lies at an altitude of 6,494 feet at the foot
of Bogda Mountain. Heaven Lake is surrounded on four sides by snow-capped
mountains where crystal-clear waters run as deep as 295 feet. Sheep and
cattle of the Kazakh people can be seen grazing on the fir-covered hills-a
refreshing change from the dry, inhospitable desert scenery all around.
Buses for Tianchi depart daily at 7:45 a.m. from the People's Park. Most
tours include a boat ride on Tianchi and lunch at a simple but pleasant
restaurant overlooking the lake. The bus returns to Urumqi at about 4:00
p.m. visitors may overnight at either the Heaven Lake Hotel or in a yurt
on the water's edge. |
