may be Zhenjiang's most beloved attraction, but the Grand Canal is certainly
its most historic. When the Grand Canal reached Hangzhou during the Sui
Dynasty, surrounding villages such as Shaoxing took advantage of the coming
prosperity. Shaoxing is surrounded by many lakes, and has old and attractive
buildings and temples. Beside fishing, Shaoxing people also live by the
town's traditional industry of making rice wine. This charming small city,
was and still is Hangzhou's best-known "suburb." Another famous
site in Shaoxing is the old home of Lu Xun, the 20th-century writer, and
a museum dedicated to him.
