City Info: Putuoshan, Zhejiang Province

Mt. Putuo is located at the south east of Zhoushan Islands, Zhejiang Province. It is famous for the scenery of "Oceanside Paradise and Buddhist Realm" and talked about as "the First Sacred place in the world". Mt. Putuo is one of the four famous Buddhist Mountains in China. The other three are Mt. Wutai (Hubei Province), Mt. Emei (Sichuan Province) and Mt. Jiuhua (Anhui Province).

People began to worship Buddha on Mt. Putuo in the year of 863 of Tang Dynasty. When it was the most flourishing, the port was crowded with boats communicating people to worship Buddha. There used to be 3 largest temples, 88 nunneries and 128 grass houses on the island. Presently there still are 3 temples Puji, Fayu and Huiji, and more than 30 nunneries including Dasheng, Meifu, Zizhu on the island. The golden bronze statue "South Sea Guanyi" is 33 meters high. Like other religious establishments, Mt. Putuo's Temples were closed during the Cultural Revolution, and the thousands of monks and nuns who lived there were forced to return to their towns and villages. Some of original Buddhist inhabitants have now returned, and in the past few years the island has again become active center of Buddhist worship.
