Shigu & the First Bend of the Yangtzi

  Shigu village means stone drum in Chinese and refers to a marble plaque shaped like a drum that commemorates a 16th century Naxi victory over a Tibetan army. Shigu is also known in modern Chinese history as a crossing-point of the Red Army on its Long March. In 1936, the survivors of the communist army reached Shigu, where the local citizens helped fery them across the river to escape the Nationalist troops in pursuit.

Tiger Leaping Gorge

  The mighty Yangtzi River sweeps through the northern part of Yunnan, and can be seen at the dramatic Tiger Leaping Gorge as it roars through sheer walls, 4,000 metres below. It is one of the world deepest gorges, 16 km.

Lugu Lake

  This remote lake is a centre for several Tibetan, Yi and Mosu villages. The Mosu (a Naxi subgroup) still practise matriarchy, and many of the Naxi customs now lost in Lijiang are still in evidence here. The lake high at 2685 m and is usually snow bound in winter.
