Lijiang is home to the Naxi minority, an ancient matriarchal society where women still hold sway. Descended from Tibetan nomads, the Naxi created a language of pictographs a millennium ago, which feminists will love: adding the word "female" to a noun strengthens its meaning or importance, while adding the word "male" diminishes it. Lijiang itself falls into clear parts: old and new. The old part is infinitely more interesting, with its pebbled paths, potted mountain plants and small restaurants.
