Tomb of Wang Zhaojun

  Located 20-30 minutes by car south of Hohhot, this tomb houses the remains of a Han Dynasty princess whose prearranged marriage in the 1st century B.C. kept peace among the local tribes. Wang Zhaojun′s tomb affords a nice view of the outskirts of Hohhot.

Wanbu Hua Yanjing Pagoda

  Located about 12 miles southeast of town, this 10th-century pagoda is a masterpiece of Liao Dynasty architecture. It has survived with little change, despite a series of renovations over the centuries. The pagoda is a beautiful brick-and-wood structure in seven storeys.

Dazhao Lamasery & Xilitu Monastery

The Mongolians adopted the Tibetan Buddhist faith in the Yuan Dynasty, and Inner Mongolia had many fine lamaseries before the Cultural Revolution. Some of those damaged lamaseries are now being restored. Dazhao Lamasery was founded in the 16th century. Nearby, the Xilitu Monastery is the home of Living Buddha.

Great Mosque

Open to visitors. It was built in the 17th century and like all late mosques built in China, it has no minaret. In imperial times there was an order for minarets to be replaced by pavilions, in which were placed inscriptions reminding the Moslems of their loyalty to the emperor.
