| The real reason for coming to Hohhot is to visit the high-altitude grasslands and experience the nomadic lifestyle. Excursions generally range from one to three days, complete with transportation, guide, meals, and hotel or yurt accommodations. Visitors can go horseback or camelback riding, attend a local rodeo, and take tea with the Mongol tribesmen. Inner Mongolia is not a dressy destination. Visitors are advised to bring layered clothing for the chilly nights. Three local grassland villages are open to foreign guests. |  |

| Require an overnight stop. Another 25 miles beyond Xilamulun Sumu, this village offers a more rugged travel experience. Yurt-dwellers must use the public showers. A hundred lakes and ponds dot the otherwise dry landscape of Huitengxile. |  |

farthest and most authentic of the grassland settlements, this small village
lies 108 miles from Hohhot. Baiyunhushao is recommended for only the hardiest
