Guiyang means Precious Sun may be a reference to the face that the sun rarely seems to shine through the cloudy and drizzle. It is the capital of Guizhou Province, which serves as the political, economical and cultural center of the province. Being called "Zhu" for short; a city with a long history; used to be the place where the Yelang ancient nationality gathered. The minority nationalities living in the province include Bu, Miao and Hui people, all of which almost accounts for 13% of the total population. Guiyang City takes jurisdiction over 5 prefectures, 3 counties and the city itself. Guiyang has a long history. In 1941, Guiyang city was officially proclaimed to be the municipality. Prior to that, Guiyang was only a county in the Han Dynasty, called Shunyuan Town in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD), Guiyang County in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) respectively. It was renamed Guiyang County in 1913. Guiyang remains a much-underrated
city. There's good food available, lively market and shopping areas and
a few interesting sights around town. Several old neighborhoods and temples
remain amid the mushrooming high-rise towers, and with some effort the
place can be appreciated for its funky conglomeration of city and village.
