Guangzhou (Canton) is the capital of Guangdong Province,
one of China′s richest and most fertile regions. Guangzhou is an interesting,
lively city in its own right, offers little of what tourists traditionally
come to China to see---namely, impressive historical monuments, grand
scenery, and local people who act as though they have never seen a foreigner
before. Guangzhou is much too sophisticated for that. Visitors will find
this to be a singularly self-possessed city, with its ambitious young
population caught up in the hubbub of disco music, western dress, and
the mania for making money.
