Drum Hill
......................................................................................................................................................................................

Drum Hill is located 9km (42 miles) east of Fuzhou. It stands by the River Min, 969 meters above sea level and abounds in springs and precipitous cliffs, covered all over by green vegetation. More than 100 places of interest are found on and around Drum Hill, including natural spectacles and historical or cultural sites.

The ancient Buddhist Yongquan Temple at Drum Hill was first built in 908AD and comprises 25 halls and has a library of 27,900 volumes of Buddhist scriptures. It has been restored over the centuries and is worth investigating before climbing the 2,500 steps close by which lead to the summit of Drum Hill.

West Lake & West Lake Park
......................................................................................................................................................................................

Lying at the foot of Sleeping Dragon Hill (Wolongshan) in the northwestern part of the city, West Lake has been a scenic spot since the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Xin Qiji (1140-1207), a noted poet of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) described it as a beautiful girl, attractive whatever the weather. It is also called the "Small West Lake" for people compared it with the West Lake in Hangzhou. It has been reconstructed and expanded over the centuries, but most of what is seen today was planned and built by order of Lin Zexu, national hero in the Qing Dynasty.

The Opposing Pagoda

White pagoda (Bai Ta) and Black pagoda (Wu Ta) is another feature of Fuzhou's landscape. The two "Opposing Pagodas" watch over the city from hilltops outside of two; the White Pagoda (built in 904 AD during the Tang Dynasty) and the Black Pagoda are imagined by locals to be in some way opposed to each other. Both Pagodas are octagonal and have seven levels. The White Pagoda stands about 135 feet tall; the Black Pagoda is over 100 feet. Both make excellent platforms for photographing the city.
