| Capital
of Fujian province, Fuzhou is a 2,000-year-old city with rich cultural heritage.
It is known as "Banyan Town" after the subtropical banyan trees
planted there since the Song dynasty. Its location on the lower reaches
of the Min River, bordering on the Taiwan straits, means it has been an
important port since the 10th century. In the 15th century, Fuzhou's shipbuilders
were the best in China and the city is considered to be the birthplace of
the Chinese Navy. With a long tradition as a coastal port and shipbuilding
center, Fuzhou is the major coastal city between Hong Kong and Shanghai.
As the central city of a province with many ethnic and linguistic links to Taiwan, Fuzhou has benefited from cross-strait investment and is today a major commercial and manufacturing center.
