| Set
against the snowy peaks of the Cang Mountains (average 4000 m) and touching
the edge of Lake Erhai, the town of Dali offers an interesting chance to
see northwestern Yunnan and meet the colourful Bai nationality. Dali sits
just off the Burma Road, some 400 km (260 miles) from Kunming. Dali was
once the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom, when Yunnan governed its own affairs
around 5 centuries. At the height of its power in the 8th and 9th centuries,
the Nanzhao Kingdom sent armies to conquer parts of present-day Burma and
Laos. In the 10th century, the kingdom was renamed Dali, but it was only
brought under Chinese rule in the Yuan Dynasty.
