City Info: Chongqing,Sichuan Province

Chongqing is called "the Mountain City" because it was built on and surrounded by steep-sided hills. It is also called "the River Town", because it stands at the confluence of the Jialing and Yangtze rivers. Chongqing is south-western China's dynamo, its largest city both in scale and population. Formerly part of Sichuan Province and now the heavily industrialized core of Chongqing Municipality - which stretches east from Dazu to the Hubei border.

The city has a long tradition as a place of defiance against hostile powers, despite being ceded as a nineteenth-century treaty port to Britain and Japan.During the Anti-Japanese War (1937-1945), the Kuomintang government moved from Nanjing to Chongqing and made the latter a war-time capital. As the site of second peace negotiations held between the Chiang Kai-shek Nationalist Party and the Chinese Communist Party and the seat of headquarters of US Forces in China-Burma- India Theater, Chongqing has been affected to many changes of political events.

In 1997, more than two million people rub elbows on the peninsula, with five times that number in the ever-expanding mantle of suburbs and industrial developments spreading away from the river. Today Chongqing is a major center of iron and steel production, motorcycle manufacturing and shipbuilding, as well as chemical and pharmaceutical production.

Chongqing is the most obvious departure point for the three-day Yangzi river cruises downstream through the Three Gorges to Yichang and Wuhan.
