By far
China's most important city, Beijing (old spelling: Peking) figures prominently
in almost every itinerary. As the birthplace and capital of the People's
Republic of China, it is the country's political, historical, and spiritual
center. Beijing has more of what most visitors come to China to see than
any other single place. The city is full of reminders of imperial China
along with landmarks and monuments marking its more recent history. Among
the more familiar sights in and around Beijing are the Forbidden City (or
Imperial Palace), the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square,
Chairman Mao's mausoleum, Beihai Park, the Ming Tombs, and of course the
Great Wall.
